Congratulations! You`re on your way to Saxony to participate on an internship. Here`s some information to help you get started.

The Internship

Be proactive in your internship experience. Research potential employers where you want to work in Saxony, Germany. Approach your personal contacts such as your School, Professors, Family, Friends and Employers to see if there are any connections with Saxony, Germany. You may be pleasantly surprised! The more you are proactive in your approach, the better chances of you are to be placed. Who else does a better job in promoting you than you? German Classes

A mandatory component of this internship is the German language training before and during your internship. Remember, this program is more than just a job placement. It is an intercultural experience. Feedback from all of our students thus far is, "I wish I had more German language ability." Ideally, you would register for a German course offered at your home institution while you are in school. If you are not able to do this, you will need to take an alternative course:

German Visa

Once you have an internship offer from a company, you will need to start the process to obtain your work visa. This may take up to 5 weeks for processing so be proactive and secure your internship early!

  • Upon Confirmation of your Internship Placement in Saxony, the University of Alberta International will provide you with a letter of confirmation to process your German work visa.
  • Complete the application package for the Youth Mobility Visa for Canadian Citizens : www.canada.diplo.de/Vertretung/kanada/en/01/GK__Vancouver/seite__vancouver.html
  • Note that the German Honorary Consul in Edmonton will be processing all of your visas for the Internship Abroad: Alberta-Saxony Program. Mr. Bernd Reuscher is the Honorary Consul of Germany in Edmonton and will have his office process the visas. His office is located near Whyte Ave and is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00am - 12:00pm. All applications MUST be made in person. There is a $50 fee to process the visa which must be paid at the time of application.

Health Insurance

Proof of proper insurance must be submitted with your application for the German Visa. Also, you must submit a copy of this to the Education Abroad Program prior to your internship. Health insurance must be valid for one year from the date of your arrival. Verify your current student coverage through your Student Health Insurance Provider. Beyond basic health and travel insurance, we strongly encourage you to consider obtaining liability coverage. You may be already covered through your parents' insurance policies. Finances

Complete the Award Distribution Form
Submit this to the Education Abroad Program along with proof of your return travel to Saxony, Germany to process your first payment.

KEEP ORIGINALS OF ALL RECEIPTS AND BOARDING PASSES of your transportation and German language classes. The originals must be surrendered to the Leonardo Office in Saxony, Germany to process your remaining stipend. Note that your full payment will not be processed until all originals are submitted.

Registration

You may need to be registered as a student while you are participating on your internship. Please confirm this with your Home Institution Contact prior to your departure.
